RESUMO GERAL

Introduction: Fish farming has expanded throughout the world, especially tilapia culture. In turn, propolis has generated great interest because of its therapeutic and pharmacological properties.
Objectives: The present research was conducted with the objective of evaluating the influence of Propolis Extract on the performance and chemical composition of Nile tilapia fillet (0. niloticus) grown in tank nets.
Methods: Nile Tilapia of the GIFT (Genetic Improvement of Farmed Tilapia) variety were researched, with an average initial weight of 180 g, measured before the first biometry,  distributed in 27 tank nets (1 m3), with 30 animals in each of the tanks adding up to 810 fish. The experiment had nine treatments, with three replicates, one of which being the control treatment. The kinds of propolis used were the ones obtained from the Experimental Farm of Iguatemi - FEI, linked to the State University of Maringá (UEM), Maringá-Paraná; and BREYER® propolis, from the city of União da Vitória - Paraná. The propolis were diluted in cereal alcohol in order to obtain propolis extract concentrations of 1%, 2%, 3% and 4%. The control treatment only received cereal alcohol.
Results: No statistical difference was observed (p> 0.05) among the treatments, in relation to the carcass, fillet and viscera yield, and averages of total length and weight values at the end of the experiment. In relation to humidity and protein the EF4 treatment presented statistical difference (p <0.05), compared with the other treatments. For ash, the EC3 and EC4 presented statistical differences (p <0.05), when compared with the control. The total lipids on the EF4 were different from the ones of the control, but showed similarity with the EF1, EF2 and EF3 treatments, and the total lipids on the EF4 were lower than control’s and other treatments.
Conclusion: Propolis extract on the Nile tilapia diet (O. niloticus), did not alter the productive performance and yield, however, the FEI treatment with 4% of propolis extract obtained an increase of humidity, decrease of proteins and lipids.
